IGOR BOJOVIĆ’S HAPPY END AS THE TRAGEDY OF A YOUNG GIRL IN THE PATRIARCHAL WILDERNESS
Abstract
The critical reception of Igor Bojović's play Happy End was initially determined by the war aspect of the text as the most important. This paper seeks to present a different reading of the play — through the prism of the protagonist Jefimija, or as she is alternatively called, Divče. When read from Jefimija's perspective, the play is not revealed primarily as an anti-war piece but rather as the tragedy of a young girl in the patriarchal wilderness, lost within her identity and trapped in a passive existential model. Additionally, this reading of the play raises many far-reaching questions concerning its interpretation, making it particularly inspiring for new realizations of the text's semantic potentials, especially those related to the relationships among the dramatic personae.
