THE INFLUENCE OF THE FAMILY ON THE WORK OF DAVID ALBAHARI (NOVELS ,,ZINC” AND ,,BAIT”)

Abstract

In this paper, we will deal with the influence of the family on the work of David Albahari. By analyzing two novels by this author, we will show how much influence parents have on their children. David Albahari is a writer whose work is marked by the search for identity. His Jewish origin stands out as a key part of that search. Parents, who survived the horrors of World War II, are an integral part of that identity. David Albahari writes a short novel about his father, "Zinc", where, by mixing dreams and reality, he tries to explain their relationship. In the novel "Zinc", Albahari tries to tell a story about his father, about his father's death, about doubt, about trying to write a book. The novel "Bait" is a novel about the mother, her memory of the past, and here we can read the writer's relationship with his parent. We realized, after interpreting the novels, that the influence of parents on the work of David Albahari was exceptional. The term parents includes not only the personalities of the father and mother, but also their life, losses, faith. Writing about his parents, Albahari, in fact, writes about himself. Self-awareness is one of the key features of David Albahari's prose, and lives of his parents help him in that quest.
