DISCOURSE FUNCTIONS OF GENRE AND RHETORICAL STRUCTURE OF LITERARY CRITICISM IN JOURNALISTIC TEXTS

Abstract

On a one month corpus of a daily newspaper Politika, the author examined a newspaperliterary criticism from rhetorical structure theory standpoint (RST) – a theory of text organizationby the authors William Mann and Sandra Thompson (1987), in other words, the paper examined validityof applying the mentioned theoretic model on the texts as a whole, being narrative structuresof a special kind by analyzing nucleus and satellites on clause level. In order to determine the levelof agreement in results analyses, we started from genesis and genre characteristics of newspaper literarycriticism observed in genre characteristics of news, reports and comments and basic discoursefuntions of this heterogeneous newspaper genre – informational, evaluation and autorepresentative.The aim of the research is to determine how rhetorical structure of the text reflects its dicourse functionand genre characteristics.
